The key thing is to realise that when you decide to reduce your weight, you need to make sure you understand how you are going to deal with all elements of that decision.
Now I booked last October to take the family to Florida. Initially I wanted to go for 3 weeks and have a long break but then my list of 'What If's?' kicked in. This included
What if the school report us for taking the kids out for too long?
What if I can't afford it?
What if I can't get the time off work?
What if my business can't cope without me?
What if I can't get Mum to look after the house for that long?
etc. etc.
There were so many 'What If's?' that I couldn't answer and work through that we ended up booking for two weeks instead.
Now this is EXACTLY what happens when you decide to reduce weight but most people aren't aware.
As a perfect example, I was working with a young lady last summer who has been telling me for weeks how much she wants to be slim, then she went out with her friends and had too much to drink and was suddenly 'struggling' again.
When I chatted it over with her it was because what if she upset her friends by not going out? and what if she didn't enjoy the night without a drink? and what if everyone put pressure on her to drink? what if her friends stopped inviting her out because of her diet?
It is very easy to see why she went out. Now when you try and think about being slim, it sounds great, knowing that you will live longer etc. But looking at it another way, it would be harder to get motivated by the though of living another 20 more years as it seems so far away! Because you can always start a diet the day after any event, the motivation for doing it can be hard to keep going.
If you have a big 'WHAT IF?' appear in your life then you are suddenly living in the moment and it makes it very easy to take the option of eating when the being slim option is such a long game!
Another example, is of a lady I worked with who's husband was putting pressure on her to stop dieting as it was damaging their social life. They loved going out for nice meals together. It came down to a day when he basically said he was getting tired of her constantly living her life around a diet and she phoned me.
The 'What If?' she had was 'What if I continue to diet and blow up my relationship with my husband?' and therefore, she stopped dieting.
But you can work through 'What If's?' and that is the great thing but first you need to know what they are.
The best way is to sit quietly and write them down. I always tell people they actually need a plan to get slim otherwise it is just a dream. I work with people to get a 'business plan' of how they are going to do it, getting down the list of 'What If's?' early on and working them through means you are much more likely to succeed.
I looked back at my diet journey and I had loads of 'What If's?' at the start that I then went on to answer.
So try and spend some time smoking out your 'What If's?'
