I had a fascinating chat today with someone at work, they were talking about stopping smoking and weight and they asked why don't people just lose weight ?
My immediately reply was 'Because of the emotional benefit food gives them...'
They looked really puzzled and said 'Why do people get emotional benefit from food?'
And it really hit me, I am talking to someone who has never been overweight, I have watched them skip meals all the time and generally eat because they have to as opposed to they really want to.
It was really alien to them that maybe somebody eats because they have had a bad day at work or someone has upset them.
I used to smoke loads and I still empathise and understand people who smoke and just how much of a crux it can be to let go of.
It reminded me last year when I chatted with a gym owner, he again had never had a weight issue and was telling me the key to being slim was get a personal trainer who would basically badger you and push you to the limits to get slim...when I asked how many people actually did lose loads of weight and stay slim he admitted not many.
Because the reality is we do eat based on our emotions, I have never yet worked with anyone who got big because they didn't go to the gym, who got big because they confused carrots with pizza, who didn't realise that eating 4000 calories a day makes you put weight on, we all got big because we decided over long periods to put too much food in our mouths for what our body needed.
The only way to change is to admit first that what you have been doing isn't working!
